Stadtbredimus walk - the alternative away day (photos: N. Finn, text: D. Thompson)
Under inauspicious skies, although the early-morning downpour had stopped, 11 members of the unit, 1 ex-member and 4 partners assembled at Stadtbredimus on the Moselle with a view to walking CAP (circuit auto-pédestre) No 158 and then repairing to the Auberge du Château for lunch.
The walk started at 9.58 (two minutes early!) and soon became strung out over the long but gradual climb out of Stadtbredimus. After a brief stop for regrouping, we entered the forest section, which was very muddy underfoot, from where we emerged into the pretty village of Greiveldange some 30 minutes later. This was roughly the half-way point of the 9 km circuit, so we had another stop by a pretty fountain for regrouping and refreshment before heading back in the direction of Stadtbredimus through the vineyards high above the Moselle, with spectacular views across to the German side of the river. After splitting up and regrouping once again, we returned to the starting-point more or less together at about 12.15, thus completing the 9 km in just over 2¼ hours – a good pace for such a large group. By this time, the sun was out, but it had stayed mercifully cool (without any rain) during the walk.
In the Auberge two rooms had been set aside for us to freshen up and change clothes. Unfortunately, the organiser had somehow forgotten his change pair of trousers and so had to stay in his walking trousers, with the (dirty) bottom section of each leg (of the trousers!) removed (unzipped). Apart from this minor sartorial blemish, everybody else looked clean and fresh as we settled down to a welcome apéritif, followed by a splendid lunch for which we were divided into two unequal groups of fish-eaters (11) and carnivores (5), washed down by two very good local wines – a Machtum Pinot Gris (white) and a Stadtbredimus Pinot Noir (red). Alas, Barbara had to leave before dessert was served, but Peter gallantly and selflessly saw to it that hers didn't go to waste! After coffee, the group dispersed at about 15.30 to go their separate ways home, having spent rather longer at the table than on the hoof!. However, there was a final alarm when Kevin discovered that his car battery was flat (his headlights had been mysteriously flashing all by themselves during the meal!). Fortunately, the organiser had his jump-leads in his car, so Kevin was quickly fixed up and then able to get home without any further problems. All in all, a very enjoyable outing, in which even the weather played its part.
